Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sorrows of Young Werther is a epistolary novel by J. W. von Goethe. First published in 1774, it reappeared as a revised edition in 1787. It was one of the most important novels in the Sturm und Drang (“Storm and Stress”) period in German literature, and influenced the later Romantic movement. The book's publication instantly placed the author among the foremost international literary celebrities, and was among the best known of his works. Goethe is, by some accounts, the father of the romantic period in literature, or at least the proto-romantic Sturm und Drang period. And The Sorrows of Young Werther was its genesis. While Voltaire parodied rationalism in Candide, Goethe transcended it with the semi-autobiographical story of Werther, a young man governed more by his emotions than his reason, whose only employment is his delight in the romantic ideals of the pastoral lives he finds in the rural town of Walheim. There he also finds Charlotte, and in her an idealized but unobtainable old-world domesticity. Werther’s internal dialog about his growing obsession with Charlotte, and his inability to cope rationally with the fact that she is engaged to—and in love with—another man, form the bulk of the book in the form of a series of ever more intense letters to a friend. Werther's descent into sorrow has captivated readers for centuries, helped by Goethe’s intensely beautiful prose, enchanting imagery, and obvious reverence for nature and a dying past.

Book excerpt: Containing three of Goethe's major prose works, this volume explores a range of themes: unfulfilled love, infidelity, divorce, tragic love, fantasy, and moral rebirth. One of Goethe's best known works, The Sorrows of Young Werther, explores the extremes of the subjective experience through the novel's depiction of a sensitive young man caught up in a love impossible to fulfill. In Elective Affinities, a novel of tragic love, Goethe employs all the requisites of sentimental romance to give a deeply ironic perspective to the idea of love. As the title indicates, Novella examines the possibilities inherent in this genre.

The majority of the novel is presented as a collection of letters written by Werther, a young artist of a highly sensitive and passional temperment, and sent to his friend Wilhelm. Werther gives a very intimate account of his stay in the fictional village of Walheim where he meets and falls in love with Lotte, a beautiful girl who is taking care of her siblings following the death of their mother. Lotte is engaged to a man named Albert. Despite the pain it causes Werther he cultivates a friendship with both of them. Each day serves as a torturing reminder that Lotte will never be able to requite his love"--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Composed almost entirely of letters written by Werther to his friend Wilhelm, The Sorrows of Young Werther is a heartbreaking narrative about a doomed love. Werther, a young artist driven more by the heart than by reason, is already enraptured with the elusive Charlotte when she marries another man better suited to her class. To keep Charlotte near, Werther befriends her husband--a bid that becomes a torturous reminder of all he's lost. Then, out of sincere pity, Charlotte can think of only one way to help free Werther from his self-destructive passion, but he has a different plan of escape. In one of the first important novels of the Sturm und Drang movement in German literature, the self-absorption of youth unites with the extremes of emotion to create a perfect storm, leaving readers shipwrecked on the shores of grief and awe. Revised edition: Previously published as The Sorrows of Young Werther, this edition of The Sorrows of Young Werther (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Book excerpt: Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749-1832) is one of the towering figures of world culture, a universal man whose extraordinary talents found expression in literature, drama, autobiography, politics and the sciences. To coincide with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Goethe's birth, Everyman's Library is publishing in a single volume his four principal masterpieces, together with a small selection of his poems and letters. Edited and introduced by Nicholas Boyle, author of the definitive biography of Goethe, the second volume of which will be published later this year, the Everyman's Library edition will show that Goethe remains one of the most intriguing and readable of European writers. Goethe established an international literary reputation overnight with The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), a story of disappointed love and pathological sensibility which mounted a powerful challenge to the rationalism of the Enlightenment.

It was the first novel of the Sturm und Drang movement. The novel is the story of a sensitive, artistic young man who demonstrates the fatal effects of a predilection for absolutes-whether those of love, art, society, or thought. Unable to reconcile his inner, poetic fantasies and ideas with the demands of the everyday world, Werther goes to the country in an attempt to restore his well-being. There he falls in love with Charlotte (Lotte), the uncomplicated fiancée of a friend. Werther leaves but later returns, feeling depressed and hopeless no matter where he lives. Torn by unrequited passion and his perception of the emptiness of life, he commits suicide.
